Matthew 5:48

July 22nd, 2009

What manner of men ought we to be?

“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”

Matthew 5:48

That seems like a rather demanding and impossible calling; but the Lord knew what he was talking about. What does this passage mean to you?

…it means that we can aspire to be perfect, but unlike Christ, it won’t all get done here in mortality….which is good because I would hate to be bored in heaven. At least I know I’ll have a LOT of work to do!

yeah, it means that we need to strive for perfection. but no one can reach it on earth.

I believe it means that we cannot stand up to God’s standards (the law). Only Jesus Christ was able to fulfill the law and we must accept what He did for us (died for our sins and rose again so that we might live). That means letting Christ reign in our lives, having a relationship with him and letting the world know who God really is, a loving and forgiving God that wishes everyone to be saved.

It’s nice to know — no matter how you interpret it — that we can be like our Father in heaven, even though it won’t be in this life. What potential we have! As Jodie pointed out, made possible by our Savior.
